The Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs announced a compulsory recall of Takata Alpha Airbag Inflators on 4 April 2018. The recall will come into effect on 31 May 2018.

This recall, made under the Fair Trading Act, has the effect of absolutely prohibiting the importation of ALL affected vehicles from 31 May.

A list of vehicle makes and models is available online. The lists of vehicles is being updated as additional information becomes available.

Any affected vehicles arriving in New Zealand from 31 May onwards will be forfeit under the Customs and Excise Act 1996, and may be seized. All importers of used vehicles and their agents need to be aware of these upcoming changes, and the makes and models which will become prohibited unless the airbag has been remediated prior to export.
