NZ Compliance and tax requirements

It’s important to check your vehicle meets New Zealand approved standards before it can be registered for use on NZ roads. Refer to the NZTA page for more information.

Unless you are a new immigrant or returning resident to New Zealand and meet all the GST-exempt criteria, you will be required to pay 15% GST on the landed value of the vehicle. This is calculated by adding the cost of the vehicle to the cost of insurance and freight (CIF) and multiplying this by 15%.

This amount may be reduced depending on how long you have owned the car. Depreciation ranges from 13% – to 75%. For example, a $20,000 car that you’ve owned for 9 months can be depreciated by 35%, making the Value for Customs only $13,000. This lowers the GST you would have to pay. Use our table below to work out your value for customs GST purposes.

Period of ownership and use overseas:

  • Less than 90 days – 0%
  • 3 months or more, but less than 4 months – 13%
  • 4 months or more, but less than 6 months – 20%
  • 6 months or more, but less than 9 months – 27.5%
  • 9 months or more, but less than 1 year – 35%
  • 1 year or more, but less than 2 years – 50%
  • 2 years or more, but less than 3 years – 60%
  • 3 years or more, but less than 4 years – 70%
  • 4 years or more – 75%.

Vehicle exporting from Singapore

Exporting a vehicle from Singapore has several requirements. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Certificate of Entitlement (COE). The vehicle must have a valid COE – a permit that allows it to be used on Singapore’s roads – if it is to be driven to the port for shipping.
  • Road tax. The road tax for the vehicle must be up to date.
  • Export documents. The vehicle owner must obtain the necessary documents for exporting the vehicle, including an Export Certificate, a Customs Permit, and a Carnet de Passage.
  • Additional taxes. Depending on the vehicle’s age and value, the owner may need to pay additional taxes before the vehicle can be exported.
  • De-registration. The vehicle owner must de-register the vehicle with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) before exporting it. This involves returning the number plates to the LTA, cancelling the road tax, and surrendering its COE.

Note: It’s recommended you seek professional advice before proceeding with the export process. AUTOHUB can help with this.

You must give AUTOHUB the exact dimensions of any vehicles over 20m3 in size, so we can provide an accurate quote.

If you are unsure if the vehicle you’re considering importing from Singapore meets New Zealand vehicle import criteria, our expert team can provide you with advice and give you peace of mind before you make a purchase.

Is it worth importing a vehicle from Singapore to New Zealand?

The answer to this question depends on various factors, including the make and model of the car, the cost of the car in Singapore, the import regulations and taxes in New Zealand, and the overall cost of importing and registering the car.

Here are some pros and cons to consider when deciding whether to import a car from Singapore to New Zealand.

Pros

  • Lower cost. In some cases, the cost of purchasing a car in Singapore may be lower than in New Zealand.
  • Availability of rare models. Singapore is a hub for international trade, which means you may have access to rare or hard-to-find car models that aren’t available in your destination country.

Cons

  • Shipping costs: The costs of shipping a car from Singapore can add up, especially as New Zealand is relatively far away.
  • Modifications required. The imported car may need to be modified to comply with New Zealand standards, which can be expensive and time-consuming.

Whether it’s worth importing a car from Singapore depends on your specific circumstances and the many factors involved. For this reason, it’s recommended you seek professional advice from experts in the vehicle import-export industry, like AUTOHUB.
